Stripes and galaxies – Using ‘Sew U Home Stretch’

Well it seemed unfair to rave about ‘Sew U Home Stretch’ and not show you some of the things I’ve made with it so far. These are my favourites: a blue and white striped top  and the Galaxy dress.

I used the basic t-shirt pattern in the book for the striped top, along with a cotton jersey. I altered the neckline to make it more of a scoop neck, and tried to create some more visual interest with a trim made of the fabric. This has a very wide neck and some clear elastic tape would probably give it a longer shelf-life. Looking at it now, I also think a cute pocket would be good with the stripes on the vertical.

For the Galaxy knit dress I combined the raglan sleeve top pattern with the skirt piece from the dress pattern. The marbled knit fabric whispered to me from the remnant box of a Brixton fabric shop. It has some gorgeous greens, blues and purples in it and I’ve convinced myself it looks like nebula clouds or, you know, accretion disk processes. Due to the spandex in it, after a few drinks it can become more of an Unforgiving Universe knit dress. But with a beautiful pattern like that, who cares!
